today i was going to write about people's loneliness at this time of year-- of the way it can sometimes make people lash out in negative ways at those around them-- but after struggling all day to write this post i realized i just simply didn't want to write about loneliness.  i wanted to write about love.

in the movie 'moonstruck' nicholas cage's character says:

'love don't make things nice, it ruins everything, it breaks your heart, it makes things a mess-- we aren't here to make things perfect.  the snowflakes are perfect.  the stars are perfect.  not us, not us-- we are here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts, and love the wrong people, and die!'

one of my all-time favorite movie scenes.

and it's true, isn't it?  love is not a happy ending-- love is a beginning-- even with someone you have loved for a very long time-- it is a beginning.  an emotion that causes us all kinds of ups and downs, all kinds of craziness.  when we are in love our brains actually do look crazy.  the love we have for our families, our friends, our children-- all of it makes us crazy at times.  but would we chose to live without it?  what meaning would there be without love?

so-- as we go into christmas weekend i am thinking about how much i appreciate the love i have in my life-- the good, the bad, the ugly, the crazy, the wonderful-- all of it very much appreciated today.
