heat

this morning, walking my dog through a meadow at the edge of the woods, i thought-- this feels like mississippi.  growing up i visited my relatives in the south-- one set of grandparents in mississippi, one in south carolina.  mississippi held its heat in a thick blanket of humidity-- and everywhere we went was heavily air conditioned.  big american cars, stylishly decorated homes-- all of it was heavy with heat and then with cold.  women's pancake make-up was held in place, their hair-- high off their heads, and their clothing perfectly pressed-- i could never understand how they could do it with all of those atmospheric changes going on all the time.

i was a wrinkled mess.
