'howard's end'

recently i watched the ' merchant ivory' film 'howard's end', starring anthony hopkins, vanessa redgrave, emma thompson, and helena bonham carter. 'howard's end' is a house-- the family home of vanessa redgrave's character. she talks eloquently and simply about what it means to her-- the sense of home she has, the connection with the trees, the flowers, the house itself. in the wake of her death, the decisions made about the house cause a lingering unquiet and eventual disaster for her family. yet the house seems to have a will of its own-- a solidness that reaches far beyond its walls and windows-- and ultimately the house seems to be in control of its own destiny.

i believe that houses do speak to us-- that at times they do know what is best for them.

if we listen...
