fireplaces in old houses

this fireplace, in an 1831 farmhouse in maine, didn't exist 10 years ago. the chimney was there, but was in such bad repair that the guys pulled it down by hand. the mason built a new chimney, starting in the basement with a solid foundation for the chimney, then building brick and cinderblock all the way up and out of the roof. he built a beautiful new firebox, around which the carpenters built a replica of other mantels in the house.

it is beautiful!
